New Biotechnology Foods and Crops
Science, Safety and Society

Bangkok Conference 10-12 July 2001

 


The Conference is being planned by a
Steering Group composed of experts from intergovernmental organisations, scientific institutions, consumer and environmental interest groups, industry, government regulators, and policy makers. The participants, limited to approximatelty 300 - 350, and the speakers, are also experts from these sectors. Presentations and discussion will focus on four principle themes:

  • Science;
  • Safety: International Consensus Building on New Biotechnology Food and Crop Safety;
  • Society: How Stakeholder views inform national and international decision-making;
  • Outcome and Conclusions.

There will be a panel led discussion in each session. The final day will draw together conclusions. The rapporteurs will present their summary of the key points arising from each session; this will be followed by a further opportunity for conference participants to discuss these issues. The Chairman’s conclusions and rapporteurs’ report will be made available on the web site and in other appropriate fora. The event will be founded on the principles of inclusiveness, transparency, openness and independence. The Conference conclusions will inform G8 Heads of Government discussions at the Genoa Summit (G-8) and other international fora.
